Kure Food Guide: Where and What to Eat in Kure, Hiroshima

There’s something about Kure’s food scene that keeps travelers coming back to this city in Hiroshima for more. Let’s embark on a journey to where and what to eat in Kure. Prepare your palates.

Kure is hard to miss. This port city is renowned for its shipbuilding heritage and maritime history being situated along Hiroshima Prefecture’s Seto Inland Sea. The Yamato Museum, Irifuneyama Memorial Museum, and Peace Memorial Park are some of the attractions to visit here.

Hunting down local delicacies is one of the best things to do in Kure. If you’re clueless about where to eat in Kure, here are our top picks!

1. Curry at Yamato Museum

Hold on, isn’t curry an Indian dish? Even an average foodie will tell you that curry originates in this South Asian nation, which is about 11 hours away from Kure by plane. So why is curry famous in Kure?

“Kure” sounds like “curry,” but history proves that Kure’s etymology isn’t from the food. But this dish is still famous in this city since, at one point, curry reached the Japanese shores and the locals recreated it.

Seafarers in Kure would eat curry every Friday lunch as the recipe is believed to be effective in preventing them from losing their sense of the days of the week during their long stay at sea. That’s why curry is famous in Kure! The Yamato Museum is among the best places that serve it.

While you know ramen is a hot noodle soup dish, reimen is a cold noodle bowl, often served chilled with refreshing sauce or broth, garnished with pickles, veggies, and sometimes meat.

Summer months can get extremely hot in Kure so the locals cool themselves with a bowl of reimen. Visit Chinraiken, a cold noodle restaurant that serves this recipe. Who needs ice cream when you have cold noodles?
